Beyond the Bottle: My Deep Dive into Appleton Estate!

Table of Contents

Nestled in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, Appleton Estate stands tall as one of Jamaica’s oldest rum producers, boasting a heritage that spans over two centuries. They’ve held onto those traditional rum-making methods, which is exactly why their rums have that unique, authentic character that makes them some of the best in the world.

Upon entering the estate, tickets in hand, we stepped into a beautifully furnished lobby, serenaded by the sultry tunes of reggae music. Our tour kicked off with a bang – or rather, a sip! We were greeted by the master mixologist, who offered us a complimentary drink. I opted for what I like to call “liquid vacation,” a pure glass of Caribbean sunshine. You can actually see my initial skepticism (and then pure delight!) in the YouTube video of my tour – seriously, check it out!

Then, it was time for a stroll down history lane. Our fantastic tour guide whisked us back to the earliest years of sugar production, showing us how the cane looked in the 15th century versus the shredded “bagasse” of today. And get this – nothing goes to waste! They burn the fiber and use the ashes as fertilizer. Genius, right?

Next up, a truly hands-on (and sticky!) experience: extracting sugarcane juice. If you’ve never tried fresh sugarcane juice, you’re missing out – it’s pure, unadulterated sweetness. After our sweet dance with the cane, it was time for some sweet science. We ventured to where the molasses is kept – that dark, sticky goodness they used to call “liquid gold” back in the day.

Then we entered the fermentation area, where the magic truly happens. It’s like a tropical party for yeast, where they gobble up the sugars and leave behind a bubbly potion that smells like victory! They even dilute the molasses with yeast developed right there on the Appleton Estate.

But the real treasure hunt began when we strolled into the aging warehouse. This place was like a secret hideout for barrels of pure awesomeness, some of them centuries old. We learned that these barrels, number one select 40-gallon American white oak barrels – the highest grade available – gradually release the unique flavors and taste of the final product. Can you imagine the stories those barrels could tell? We even found out that Appleton has approximately 200,000 barrels of aging rum in total across their warehouses, with the largest in Kingston holding up to 40,000!

And the grand finale? A rum tasting, of course! We were introduced to the Appleton Estate 12 Year Rum. This wasn’t just a sip; it was an experience. Our guide showed us how to look for the “ring of aging” – that olive greenish ring where the rum meets the glass. And then, the ultimate pairing: swirling the rum in your mouth with chocolate. My tastebuds practically did a jig!

After the adventures of cane juice sipping, molasses tasting, and rum experiencing (not literally drinking all the molasses, thank goodness!), we feasted on a delicious lunch and refreshments. We also had the chance to view the historic artifacts showcased at this amazing estate.

And just like that, our whirlwind tour of the Appleton Estate came to an end. We laughed, we learned, and most importantly, we tasted some of the finest rums in the Caribbean. Seriously, this experience is a must-do for anyone visiting Jamaica.
