Pink Trek Manchester: A Hike for Hope, Health, and Community in Jamaica

My mom is a two-time cancer survivor. So when I heard about a fundraiser walk supporting breast and prostate cancer screening and helping families in need, there was no question I was showing up. This wasn’t optional. This was personal.

I’ve been on hikes before, so I wasn’t expecting anything I hadn’t seen. But Pink Trek Open Country in Manchester — organized every year by Trekkers Adventures Jamaica — completely surprised me. This wasn’t just another scenic trail. This was one of the most meaningful mornings I’ve spent on this island, and I want to tell you everything about it.

What Is Pink Trek?

Pink Trek is an annual fundraising hike held by Trekkers Adventures Jamaica.  This year it was held in the open countryside of Manchester, Jamaica. Every registration fee and donation goes toward supporting breast and prostate cancer screening and helping families in need. Because cancer doesn’t just affect the person who is sick — it reaches into entire families. Medical bills, lost work time, emotional stress — it’s heavy. And Pink Trek steps up every year to help carry some of that weight.

Mr. Derrymour Patrick telling us about the farm and crops

Led by founder and tour guide Derrymour Patrick. The trail starts at Mizpah Primary School in Manchester at around 7 AM, and hikers are given the option to complete either four miles or eight miles depending on their fitness level. So whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, there’s a place for you on this trail.

The Trail: Rolling Hills, Farms, and Fields of Butterflies

The hike kicked off with warm-up exercises and a briefing from Derrymour Patrick himself. It’s an open country hike, which means there are no narrow forest paths boxing you in. Instead, you’ve got rolling hills stretching out in every direction, farmland as far as your eyes can carry you, and this crisp Manchester morning air that makes you feel completely alive.

Derrymour is a son of Manchester. He knows this land and its farming traditions like the back of his hand, and he’d stop along the way to share what was growing in the fields around us. Walking with someone who genuinely loves the place they’re showing you makes all the difference. We passed farmers out working their land, and honestly, getting a chance to talk to them was one of the highlights of the whole morning.

And then there were the cows. Plenty of cows. Some were friendly, some were not particularly impressed by our pink parade, and most were completely unbothered. We even spotted a donkey along the way. If that doesn’t make you smile, I don’t know what will.

Fields of butterflies lining the Pink Trek trail

But the most beautiful thing on that entire trail? The butterflies. There were fields of them — mostly white, but I spotted yellow, purple, and orange ones weaving through the grass along the path. I wasn’t expecting that, and it stopped me in my tracks every single time.

The View from Heron Hill

The trail winds up to Heron Hill, and when you get there, you understand why. Mud Lake stretches out below, and off in the distance, the city of Mandeville spreads across the landscape with the Manchester hills rolling out in every direction. Valleys drop away into deep pockets of green. It’s one of those views that makes you stop talking completely for a minute. You just stand there and take it all in.

Standing up there, surrounded by everyone in their pink shirts with that whole panorama laid out in front of us — that’s a moment I’m not going to forget. The scenery was breathtaking, but what made it truly special was the reason we were all there together.

The Finish Line Feel

Trekkers Adventures takes care of their hikers from start to finish. Water was provided along the trail, and at the end of the hike, a full meal was waiting for us. It was delicious — I was so caught up in the moment that I completely forgot to take pictures of the catering setup and meal, and I am not even a little sorry about that. Some meals are just meant to be eaten.

Every participant receives a pink medal at the finish line

But the best part of crossing that finish line? A cheering committee was waiting for us. And every single participant who completed the hike received a pink medal around their neck. I’m not going to lie — that medal meant something. After walking those miles with that much purpose, having someone cheer you across the finish line and place a medal in your hands is a feeling that’s hard to describe. You just have to experience it.

More Than a Hike

What Pink Trek gave me that morning was bigger than beautiful views. It reminded me that healing happens in community. That hope grows when people choose to show up for each other. That something as simple as putting on your sneakers and walking together can become genuinely powerful when you do it with purpose.

I thought about my mom with every step. I thought about every person fighting right now, every survivor who made it through, every family still carrying that weight. And I felt grateful — for her strength, for the medical advances that saved her, for events like this one that bring people together for something so much bigger than themselves.

Plan Your Own Pink Trek Experience

Pink Trek happens once a year, so if you’re in Jamaica and you hear about it, mark your calendar. Bring your family, bring your friends, wear your pink, and come ready to walk, connect, and make a real difference. Every step adds up. Every registration counts.

And if you can’t wait for the annual event, Trekkers Adventures runs regular hikes twice a month plus private tours on request. The staff are warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely fun to spend a morning with. I will absolutely be hiking with them again — that much I know for sure.
