Looking for a quiet escape? Whispering Bamboo Cove Resort in St. Thomas, Jamaica, might be exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s important to know what to expect. This isn’t your typical luxury getaway; it’s an authentic, budget-friendly spot with some real charm and a few quirks.
My trip to Whispering Bamboo started after a long drive from Jamnesia Surf camp. I arrived at 12:40 PM, a little before the 1:00 PM check-in time. While my room was being prepared, I took the opportunity to explore Retreat Beach, which is literally just a few steps away. It was a perfect, unplanned way to start the stay.
One of the most important things to know about Whispering Bamboo is that the food is made to order, and it’s delicious. I had some amazing brown stew fish and bammy for dinner. However, this means you need to plan ahead. For example, you must order your breakfast the night before. This is a small adjustment, but it ensures you get a fresh, local meal.
The resort’s grounds are stunning, well-maintained, and surrounded by the lush landscape of St. Thomas. The sea views are absolutely breathtaking. However, the beautiful coastline is very rocky, so don’t expect to go for a swim right outside your room. It’s more of a “look but don’t dive” situation. Parking is also limited, but you can always find a spot on the street in this rural area. The staff, on the other hand, are absolutely wonderful, friendly, and genuinely care about their guests’ experience.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a budget hotel—they’re simple and safe, but they could use some updates. The Wi-Fi can be spotty, which might be a blessing in disguise if you’re looking to truly disconnect.
So, would I recommend Whispering Bamboo Cove Resort? It truly depends on the traveler. If you need perfect Wi-Fi for work calls or expect luxury amenities, this is not the place for you. However, if you’re looking for an authentic, budget-friendly experience in the heart of St. Thomas, with incredible sea views and amazing local food, then this spot has a unique charm. It’s the perfect place for a quick overnight stop while exploring a less-traveled, but incredibly beautiful, part of Jamaica. St. Thomas doesn’t try to impress you with fancy resorts; it shows you Jamaica as it is, with its beautiful coastlines, friendly people, and all the little imperfections that make travel interesting.
