Let me give you the history first, because it is genuinely fascinating and sets the whole tone for the visit.

Craighton Estate dates back to the 18th century. That means over 200 years of history sitting in these mountains.  Two centuries of soil, rainfall, mist, and cultivation produced something that coffee lovers around the world consider among the finest beans on the planet. The estate has seen Jamaica under colonial rule, through emancipation, through independence, and into the present day. That kind of history does not disappear. You feel it the moment you step onto the property.

Craighton Estate is owned by a Japanese company called UCC, the Ueshima Coffee Company. They purchased the estate back in 1981 and have been meticulously farming and exporting Craighton Blue Mountain coffee ever since. Seventy percent of everything they grow goes directly to Japan. The remaining thirty percent is exported to other countries around the world.

None of it is sold in stores in Jamaica.

The tour begins with a lecture, and I want to encourage you not to skip past this part when you are planning your visit. It is genuinely engaging, and it reframes everything you think you know about why Blue Mountain coffee is different.

You learn about the history of coffee in Jamaica: how it arrived, how it spread, how this particular mountain range became the defining factor in its reputation. And then you learn specifically about Craighton Estate: its origins, its evolution, how UCC came to own it, and how they have managed it across more than four decades of stewardship.

But the part that really landed for me was the explanation of the geography. Blue Mountain coffee is not famous because of good marketing. Where Exactly Is Pin’kra River?

Pin’kra River is tucked inside Fort George, a community in St. Mary parish one of the most naturally beautiful corners of Jamaica. St. Mary sits on the northeastern side of the island, and it earns every bit of its reputation as one of the wettest and most lush parishes in the country. That consistent rainfall is exactly what keeps this river full, clear, and flowing strong all year round.

This is not a tourist hotspot. There are no signs pointing you there, no souvenir stalls at the entrance. It’s the kind of place that still feels like it belongs to the people who live around it and when you’re out on that trail, you’ll understand why that’s such a rare and beautiful thing.

What the Trail Is Actually Like

Here’s the great news for anyone who doesn’t consider themselves a hardcore hiker: this trail is genuinely beginner-friendly. The terrain is mostly flat and open, with a clear path that runs right alongside the river for the majority of the route. There are no steep mountain climbs, no thick bush scratching at your arms and legs, no confusing forks in the trail. Just a clean, easy walk through some of the most gorgeous countryside St. Mary has to offer.

Along the way, you’ll stop at the river three times to cool off, wade around, and simply take it all in. In between those stops, there are five knee-deep crossings where you walk straight through the moving water to continue on the trail. It sounds intense, but honestly, it’s one of the most fun parts of the whole experience. By the second crossing, you stop caring about staying dry and just start enjoying yourself.

The air out there smells like rain and earth. Everything is impossibly green. And the sound of the river following you along the path has this way of making the rest of the world feel very, very far away. That’s the kind of feeling St. Mary gives you, and Pin’kra delivers it in full.

The Main Attraction: The Natural Pool

Everything on the trail builds toward one moment, and when you get there, you’ll understand why. At the end of the hike, you reach the main waterfall  a wide, open natural pool with water pouring in from above. It’s big enough for a whole group to swim in at the same time, with room to float, drift, and just exist in the middle of something genuinely beautiful.

The sound of the falls fills the whole space. The water is cool and refreshing. And the energy out there I don’t have a better word for it than pure magic.

One thing I want to be straight with you about: the current is strong in certain areas of the pool. I’m not the strongest swimmer, so I stayed close to the corners where the water was calmer. I still had an incredible time. The key is knowing your own swimming level, finding a spot that feels right for you, and then letting yourself enjoy every second of it. Don’t let the current warning scare you off just let it make you smart about where you position yourself.

The Gear Mistake I Made (So You Don’t Have To)

This is the most important section of this whole post, so please, read it carefully. When my group first arrived at Pin’kra, we were dressed like people going on a regular trail hike. Hiking boots. Long pants. A light jacket. We were so wrong.

Within minutes, we were soaked. River crossings, unexpected splashes, the general wetness that comes with hiking directly beside a river in one of Jamaica’s rainiest parishes  none of it cares about your hiking outfit. We laughed the whole way through, but we learned our lesson the wet way so you don’t have to.

• Thick-soled water shoes – not regular sneakers, not hiking boots. You need grip on wet rocks and comfort in moving water.
• Swimwear or a wetsuit  – wear it as your base layer. You will be in the water. Dress accordingly from the start.
• A dry bag or waterproof phone case – protect your valuables. The river doesn’t care how expensive your phone is.
• A change of clothes – leave dry clothes in the car or in a sealed bag. You’ll want them for the drive home.
• Water and snacks – stay hydrated, especially on a warm day. The activity level adds up faster than you’d expect.
• Sunscreen – the open terrain means direct sun exposure on parts of the trail. Don’t skip this one.

Pro Tip: St. Mary is genuinely prone to rainfall; it’s part of what makes Pin’kra so beautiful and full year-round. Build a little flexibility into your schedule in case of a shower, and check the forecast the morning of your hike. A little rain won’t ruin the experience; it’ll actually make everything greener.

The honest answer? Almost everyone. If you are a first-time hiker looking for a trail that won’t leave you crawling on your knees at the end this is it. If you are a seasoned hiker who wants something a little different from the standard mountain trek – this is also it. If you are a water person, a river person, someone who lights up at the idea of wading through cool, clear water surrounded by green mountains – Pin’kra was basically made for you.

Families with older kids will enjoy this trail. Groups of friends looking for something memorable to do in Jamaica beyond the usual spots will love it. Solo travelers joining an organized group will leave with new people they want to come back with.

The one thing to keep in mind is the waterfall pool. If you are not a confident swimmer, stay in the calmer corners near the edges. There is plenty of space to enjoy the falls safely without putting yourself in the stronger current.

Stop One: The Barrington Watson Museum, Yallahs

Our first stop was the Orange Park Great House in Yallahs, also known as the Barrington Watson Museum. Before you scroll past because the word “museum” made you hesitate, hear me out. This is not your average museum experience. Not even close.

Barrington Watson was one of Jamaica’s greatest artists. Born in 1931 in Lucea, Hanover, he went on to study at the Royal College of Art in London before dedicating his life to both creating and teaching Jamaican art at the highest level. In 1968, he purchased this sprawling estate in the hills of Yallahs, and it became his home for more than forty years until his passing in 2016. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust has declared the property a National Monument, and the moment you step onto the grounds, you understand exactly why.

The estate holds Watson’s own paintings alongside works from his colleagues and former students. Walking through it feels less like a museum visit and more like being invited into the home of someone extraordinary, which is exactly what it is. Stop Two: Bath Fountain — Centuries of Healing in the Hills

Bath Fountain has been on my list for years. I had heard mixed things — some people mentioned aggressive vendors and an unwelcoming atmosphere. I want to set the record straight: when Kim and I arrived, we were met with nothing but warm, relaxed, friendly energy. Kim knows the area and the locals, which certainly helped, but the overall vibe was welcoming from start to finish.

Bath Fountain is one of Jamaica’s most historically significant natural attractions. The mineral-rich hot springs here have been drawing visitors since the 1700s, and the healing reputation of these waters has only grown across the centuries. We drove up to the Bath Fountain Hotel and hiked up to the river and the springs, and I want to prepare you for one thing before you go: that water is HOT. These are genuine mineral hot springs, and you will feel every degree of it.

I stepped under spring, experienced the hot water, respected it deeply, and stepped aside. The minerals in these springs: sulfur, calcium, and others – have been credited with therapeutic benefits for the skin, joints, and muscles for generations. Stop Three: Grand Begonia Beach and Resort

We had hit some heavy rain the night before, so the water was not ideal for swimming that particular day. But here is what was ideal: the fried fish, which was exceptional, and the cold Sorrel flavored Red Stripe, which was exactly what the moment called for. And then, just before we left, a full rainbow appeared over the water. I could not have scripted it better.

Grand Begonia is one to watch. As it continues to grow and settle in, this spot has the makings of a go-to St. Thomas destination for both locals and visitors who want something authentic, local, and genuinely beautiful.

Stop Four: Baileys Beach — The Perfect Sunset Swim

We wrapped up the day at Baileys Beach on the way back to Kingston, and this is where St. Thomas delivered its final, unhurried masterpiece.

The water was calm. Clear. Warm in that particular way that Jamaican sea water gets in the late afternoon. We swam as the sky shifted through shades of orange and gold and pink, and I thought, this is exactly why I do this. This is the Jamaica that does not end up on a postcard. The quiet version, the local version, the version you only find when you turn off the main tourist route and just drive.

Baileys Beach is not a resort beach. It does not have a swim-up bar or a DJ. It has clean water, a gorgeous sky, and the kind of peace that reminds you why you came to an island in the first place.

Who Are the Maroons? (And Why You Need to Know)

You cannot walk into Charles Town without understanding who the Maroons are and what they represent. So let me back up for a moment.

Hundreds of years ago, enslaved Africans were brought to Jamaica against their will, forced to work on sugar plantations under brutal, inhumane conditions. But some of them refused. They ran into the rugged, nearly impossible mountain terrain of Jamaica’s interior, and they built their own free communities. They grew their own food. They created their own system of governance. They developed military strategies so effective, so deeply rooted in their knowledge of the land, that the most powerful empire in the world could not defeat them.

The British tried. Repeatedly. And they failed.

Eventually, the British Empire had no choice but to sit down and sign a peace treaty, legally recognizing the Maroons’ freedom and their right to govern themselves. This happened before slavery was officially abolished in Jamaica. Let that sink in. They won their freedom through sheer will, strategy, and courage, under the banner of a motto that said everything: Freedom or Death.

When I arrived at Charles Town, I was welcomed by the tour guide, Captain Padam. And from the first moment he started speaking, I knew this was going to be something different.

Captain Padam does not recite facts the way a textbook does. He carries his people’s story with a quiet, steady pride that gets into you. He is warm, deeply knowledgeable, and has this remarkable ability to make 300-year-old history feel like it happened last Tuesday and the community is still processing it together. His connection to this place is personal, and that comes through in every single word.

The Asafu Yard: Sacred Ground

Our first stop was the Asafu yard, and I want to make sure you understand what this space is before I describe it, because context matters here.

The Asafu yard is the sacred gathering space at the heart of the Charles Town community. This is where meetings are held, where ceremonies take place, where decisions about the community are made, and where the deep connections to African traditions are actively kept alive. But it is also something more. The Asafu yard was the space where Maroon warriors would spiritually reset after battle – a deliberate, intentional practice of not carrying the negative energy of war back into their homes and families. Standing in that yard, I felt the weight of that intention. The care that went into designing not just how they fought, but how they came home.

Next, we moved into the Maroon Museum, and this is where I spent the most time.

The museum is intimate. Personal. Real. The walls are covered with photographs, documents, artifacts, and stories that paint a vivid, layered picture of Maroon life – the resistance, the culture, the politics, and the heroes. I stood in front of several displays just reading, just absorbing. There is so much history here that never made it into the school curriculum I grew up with, and seeing it all laid out in front of me felt like finally being handed the complete story after years of getting only a chapter.

This is not a glossy, corporate museum experience. It is human. And that intimacy is exactly what makes it powerful.

If you are the kind of traveler who wants to actually understand the place you are visiting — not just photograph it — budget serious time for this museum. Go slow. Read everything. Ask questions.

When the Drums Started

And then the drumming began.

I am not exaggerating when I say the sound went straight through my chest. It was not just music. It was not performance in the way we usually think of that word. It was communication. It felt ancient and alive at the same time, like a memory my body recognized even though my mind had never heard it before.

The Maroon drum tradition is not something that was revived for tourists. This is a continuous, unbroken practice. These rhythms have been passed down through generations, carrying meaning, carrying messages, carrying culture across centuries of pressure and change. When the dancers moved with a power and a grace that left absolutely no doubt about what this meant to them I found myself completely absorbed. Standing there with a ridiculous smile on my face, helplessly moving to music I had never heard before but somehow already knew.

That moment alone is worth the drive to Portland.

The Abeng: An Encrypted Communication System, Centuries Before Technology

Before leaving, I stopped at the Maroon craft store and picked up an Abeng. If you have never heard of one, let me introduce you to one of the most ingenious tools in Jamaican history.

The Abeng is a cow horn that the Maroons used to send messages across the mountains. They developed an entire communication system using the horn, specific signals and calls that could travel vast distances through the hills. British soldiers could hear the sound. They could never decode it. It was the Maroons’ encrypted communications system, built centuries before anyone invented radio, before anyone dreamed up a telephone, before cybersecurity was a word anyone knew.

I bought one. It is sitting on my shelf right now, and every time I look at it, I think about the genius of the people who created that system under impossible pressure, with their lives on the line. 

This Is Not a Place Frozen in Time

Here is the thing that stayed with me most after leaving Charles Town, and the thing I most want you to understand before you visit.

The Maroons of Charles Town are not a chapter in a history book. They are not a preserved relic. They are a living, thriving, fully present community that is actively protecting their culture, their traditions, their language, and their land , right now, today, in 2026. The drumming continues. The Abeng still sounds across the hills. The Asafu yard still holds the community together. Captain Padam still walks visitors through a history that is also his personal inheritance.

Stop 1: Craighton Estate — Irish Town, St. Andrew

Our first stop was Craighton Estate, sitting at about 2,600 feet above sea level in the Blue Mountains. This is a working coffee farm, and not just any coffee — Blue Mountain coffee is one of the most sought-after coffees in the entire world. The combination of climate, rich soil, mountain mist, and rainfall creates something that coffee lovers pay serious money for. Standing there in the middle of it, surrounded by mist and green hills, you understand exactly why.

The one-hour tour begins inside a two-hundred-year-old great house, where you get the full history of the estate and of Blue Mountain coffee — from cherry to cup. Followed by a  freshly brewed Blue Mountain coffee tasted straight from the estate.  From there, you hike through the coffee farm all the way up to 3,000 feet above sea level, where the views open up completely. On a clear day you can see Kingston Harbour, Port Royal, and Portmore laid out below you. The tour wraps up with  a  walk through tour of the great house. Stop 2: 1876 Pretty Close — Gordon Town, St. Andrew

After the coffee tour, we headed down to Gordon Town to a spot called 1876 Pretty Close. The name is completely accurate — it is pretty close to Kingston, not far at all, but the moment you arrive it feels like a whole other world.

Omar Edwards — who goes by Ramo, which is just Omar spelled backwards — owns and runs this riverside dining experience tucked into the hills of Gordon Town. We sat right by the river and were served ital soup to start, followed by a full Jamaican spread: fried fish, ackee and saltfish, ital stew, rice and peas, festival, and banana fritters. Everything was fresh and made completely to order.

The food was absolutely delicious, but it hits different because of where you are sitting. The sound of the river running beside you, the cool mountain air, the green surrounding you on every side — it was the kind of meal that slows you down in the best possible way. I did not want it to end.

And then, because one unforgettable experience is never quite enough, we hiked to a waterfall. We made our way through bush and fruit trees, and at the end of it all — the water was shallow, clear, and so refreshingly cool that stepping in felt like pressing a full reset button on your entire body.

Outside food and drinks are not allowed inside Spring Paradise. Leave the cooler and the food containers at home — they have a restaurant, a bar, and a snack shop on site, so you are well taken care of. The most important thing to remember is that food is made to order. Put in your order as soon as you arrive, then head to the water. Your meal will be ready when it is ready, and that is perfectly fine. The whole point of being here is to slow down anyway.

I went on a Wednesday and had the entire space to myself, which was nothing short of magical. If you want that same experience — and I highly recommend it — a weekday visit is the move. No crowds, no rush, just you and one of the most peaceful rivers in St. Ann.

Because the Bunny Lee Museum at 17 Burns Avenue is one of the most important music history sites in the entire Caribbean — sitting quietly on a normal-looking street, just waiting for you to find it.

Who Was Bunny “Striker” Lee?

Edward O’Sullivan Lee — better known as Bunny “Striker” Lee — was the number one reggae producer in Jamaica every single year for an entire decade. Not once. Not twice. A full decade, from 1967 to 1976. Consistently. At the top. Of his game.

One of his most famous productions is “Cherry Oh Baby,” originally recorded by Eric Donaldson. Bunny Lee produced it alongside Tommy Cowan, and that song has been covered more than thirty times — by artists like UB40 and the Rolling Stones. Yes, that Rolling Stones. A song born right here in Kingston, produced by a man most people have never heard of, covered by one of the biggest rock bands on the planet. Let that sink in for a second.

But here is the part of his story that really got me. Back in the 1960s and ’70s, reggae was exploding in Jamaica — but the rest of the world had absolutely no idea it existed. Bunny Lee decided that was unacceptable. He and his team packed records into a bag, boarded a plane to England, and started promoting Jamaican music there. When that worked, he did the same thing in Canada. Then the United States. He did not wait for the world to discover reggae. He brought reggae to the world.

Walking through this museum feels less like a typical museum visit and more like stepping directly into that golden era of Jamaican music. This was Bunny Lee’s actual home. You are literally moving through the same rooms where some of reggae’s greatest moments took shape. After floating in it for twenty minutes, I was not about to argue with that. There is something about the place that makes you feel genuinely restored.

Stop 3: Charles Town Maroon Cultural Experience

After World Pool, we headed to Charles Town — and this is the stop I feel most strongly about. Every single person who visits Portland should make time for this. No exceptions.

Charles Town is one of Jamaica’s historic Maroon communities, and the moment you arrive, you feel the weight of what happened here. The history. The sacrifice. The absolute refusal to accept anything less than freedom. The Maroons lived under one banner — freedom or death — and spending time in Charles Town helps you understand, in a very real and personal way, exactly what that meant.

We walked through the Asafu Yard — the community’s gathering space — and the community museum, learning about the history, the politics, and the heroes who shaped one of the most remarkable resistance movements in Caribbean history. I ended up buying an Abeng from the Maroon Craft Store. An Abeng is a horn made from a cow’s horn that the Maroons used to communicate across the mountains during battle. Holding it in my hands was one of those moments where history stops being something you read about and becomes something you can actually feel.

I also watched traditional Maroon drumming and dancing in the Asafu Yard. The energy is infectious and the performances are not a show put on for tourists — these are living traditions, passed down through generations, being kept alive by the people of Charles Town right now. Stop 4: Nanny Falls — Moore Town Maroon Community

Our final stop was Moore Town for the Nanny Falls Tour — another company owned by Deeno, named in honor of Queen Nanny herself, national heroine and legendary leader of the Windward Maroons. While there, I also had the chance to visit the monument dedicated to Nanny and the Moore Town Maroon Museum.

I had heard about Nanny Falls before, but nothing quite prepares you for actually being there. The surrounding terrain once served as a natural fortress for the Maroons, helping them defend their freedom during colonial times. Every rock face, every ridge, every winding path through those hills meant something. It kept people free.

There is a short hike before you reach the falls — green, beautiful, and absolutely worth every step. The water tumbles into a pool that locals believe has been spiritually significant for centuries. It is said that Queen Nanny herself used these falls as a place of renewal and strategy. So when you step into that water, you are not just taking a swim. You are standing in a place where one of the most powerful women this island has ever known once stood.

I stood there watching the water fall, thinking about everything that had to happen for this place to still exist. For these stories to still be told. For me to be swimming there, learning them. That feeling does not leave you easily.

1. Black River Safari

Want to come face to face with a real crocodile — not behind glass, but gliding through a river like it owns the place? Because it does. 3. Lovers Leap

There are views, and then there is Lovers Leap. You’re standing on a 1,700-foot cliff at the southern tip of the island, looking out at a Caribbean Sea so impossibly blue that your brain struggles to process it. The horizon stretches out forever, the wind wraps around you, and time feels like it completely stops.

But this place carries more than a pretty view. Back in the 1700s, two enslaved people fell deeply in love on a nearby plantation. When the owner tried to separate them, they chose to hold hands and leap from the cliff together rather than live apart. The story is heartbreaking and powerful, and it gives this spot a weight and meaning that stays with you long after you leave.

5. Frenchman’s Bay Beach

From the road, Frenchman’s Bay doesn’t look like much. Most people drive right past it. And that is exactly why it’s so special. Walk through, turn the corner, and suddenly you’re greeted with colorful fishing boats bobbing in the water, blue-green sea meeting golden sand, and not a single tourist in sight. Just locals, good food, and the most laid-back energy you’ve ever felt in your life.

There’s a beach bar serving fresh local food that will absolutely hit the spot. The sunset here is something else — the painted fishing boats catch the fading light and the whole scene looks like a painting. Bathrooms and showers are available, the beach is completely free, and the vibe is so relaxed that you’ll lose track of time entirely.
